What to do if you smell gas or if there is a fire

If you smell gas:

  • Don’t panic, don’t light any fires, and don’t turn any electrical devices (light switches) on or off
  • Turn off the gas appliance
  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area
  • If you can still smell gas, turn off your gas supply and contact Gas R Us or a gasfitter for advice
  • If you can still smell gas after turning off your gas supply, call 000.

If you have a fire, explosion or uncontrolled gas leak call 000 immediately, and:

  • Don’t panic, don’t light any fires, and don’t turn any electrical devices (light switches) on or off
  • Evacuate the area
  • If it is safe to do so:
    • Turn off the gas appliance and turn off the gas supply at the gas cylinder or meter
    • Extinguish the fire using a fire blanket or fire extinguisher
  • If the fire is extinguished, open doors and windows to ventilate the area.
